Eastern Hokkaido

Lake Saroma (サロマ湖, Saroma-ko), also Saroma Lagoon, is a coastal lagoon (hence a body of brackish water) in Saroma, Kitami, and Yūbetsu Hokkaidō, Japan. 

Kawayu Onsen is located in the northeast of Hokkaido. The source is Atosanupuri (Mount Iou), which is still active as an active volcano, and the hot water contains sulfur minerals. The hot water is so powerful that it can melt a 5-inch nail in a week

Rain or shine, sun or clouds, Lake Kussharo in Akan National Park near the town of Kawayu-Onsen offers breathtaking views.

Located 11 km from Teshikaga and 12 km from Kawayu Onsen, the surface of Lake Mashu sits 351 m above sea level. With a 20 km shoreline, an area of 19.2 km2, and a maximum depth of 211.4 m, the waters of this crater lake have been called the clearest in the world and it mesmerizes visitors with its ever-changing surface. The lake is surrounded by the crater wall, which is 300-400 m tall and has an average grade of 45 degrees. No other lake in Japan has such an unforgiving shoreline.

In October 4, 2017, the national park that encompassed Lake Akan was renamed as the Akan-Mashu National Park. Lake Akan is surrounded by three majestic peaks: Mt. Meakan (pronounced "may-ah-con"), Mt. Oakan ("oh-ah-con"), and Mt. Akan Fuji. There is also the smaller, gem-like Lake Onneto located to the southwest. Kushiro Shitsugen National Park (釧路湿原) is the largest marsh in Japan located in Hokkaido, spreading over an area of 29,000 hectares, of which 7,900 hectares are protected under the Ramsar Convention.

Cape Nosappu is located at the eastern entrance of Hokkaido, where the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk meet.
