Shimane

Shimane Prefecture and its natural beauty are steeped in mythology. It is home to pristine island beaches, a once-important silver mine, and one of Japan's most sacred temples

Shimane Prefecture stretches along the northern coast of the Chugoku region. Because of its sparse population, the province has hardly changed over the years. Surrounded by mountains, Shimane's main attractions include Izumo Taisha Shrine, one of the oldest and most sacred Shinto shrines, Matsue Castle and its original tower, the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine World Heritage, Iwami Kagura folk dance and castle towns – Tsuwano and Matsuda. Just offshore are the Oki Islands, a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts. The clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing and kayaking, while Mount Daimanji and Mount Takuhi challenge hikers.

The Adachi Museum of Art is located in Furukawa Town in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture. It was built under the concept of bringing together the art of Japanese painting with the art of the Japanese garden. The museum is famous for its beautiful Japanese gardens, which received three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. Visitors can delight in the cleverly contrived “living Japanese paintings” and “living hanging scrolls,” and enjoy the expansive Japanese gardens that incorporate the...
